History

Bien Padre Foods was born in 1974, when a small group of Humboldt County residents decided that they wanted to start making "Great Food at a Fair Price." With an honorable mission statement and a recipe for table tortillas, Bien Padre Foods set out to start their quest.

Specializing in delicious and healthy snack foods and motivated by the belief that when it comes to choosing the correct ingredients, "Simplicity is the Best Flavor," Bien Padre Foods continues to lead the health food industry today. With a wide assortment of great tasting tortillas and chips, Bien Padre continues to drive product innovation with creative recipes using healthy ingredients.

Over thirty years later, Bien Padre Foods is still here in Humboldt County, and still making great food at a fair price. All of our Organic products are certified by QAI, and in 2007 we received the bronze award from Silliker labs for our HACCP program. With a strong foundation set, Bien Padre Foods has grown to be a trusted partner in the health food industry.

This simply means that we will continue to find ways to produce healthy alternatives to traditional snack foods.

With over 30 years of experience in making delicious and wholesome snack foods, it is safe to say we have learned a few things along the way. One very important lesson that we learned early on, is that, "Simplicity is the Best Flavor!"

We truly believe that food actually tastes better when it is produced naturally. During product development on any one of our new and exciting snacks, Bien Padre Foods is committed to using only "real" and whenever possible certified "Organic" ingredients. Of course we believe that these ingredients are healthier for us, but we have found that they offer better flavor as well.

Bien Padre Foods is committed to supporting our community and environment. Always striving to be a better neighbor, Bien Padre Foods donates all daily food waste to local organic farmers and ranchers. All overruns on finished goods are set aside for donation to local food banks.

Legacy of Firsts

Bien Padre has always been a leader in product quality and product innovation. It was always our mission to make great food, so being a leader in product quality is just a byproduct of all of our hard work and efforts.

We never really tried to be a leader in product innovation, it just seemed to happen all on its own.

Our tortilla chips are a perfect example. Bien Padre began making tortillas in 1974. Due to problems with our original equipment (not that it could have had anything to do with guy working the machine at the time), we found many of our tortillas were coming out with holes in them. Not able to package these for sale, and not willing to throw away good food, our owners came up with a great idea! They contacted a local Mexican Food Restaurant, and asked if they could use their deep fryer for an afternoon.

The tortillas made a great chip, and since we had so many, we decided to package them in one pound bags, and start selling them to local grocery stores. Just like that, Bien Padre chips were born. We produced the very first tortilla chip available in one pound packages, which still remains an industry standard today.

As with our first chips, almost all of our "firsts" have become standards in our industry today. We were the first company to produce Organic Tortilla Chips for Airlines, making Organic Blue Corn Tortilla chips for Northwest Airlines in-flight snacks. Bien Padre Foods continues to be the first choice in Organic Tortilla Chips served as in-flight snacks by Airlines today.

The first company to produce "Low Carb" Tortilla Chips, Bien Padre began to receive National recognition with this exciting new product. The height of the "Low Carb" craze came in 2003, when both TIME and USA Today ran articles featuring our chip.

With exciting new products like "Flax Snax", the industry's first serving sized Organic Tortilla Chips with Flax Seeds; Organic MultiGrain, a hearty chip using Organic Black Beans, Seeds, and Soy Protein; Tortillas made with real spinach leaves or whole flax seeds; and of course offering exquisite new choices like "Forbidden Rice" and "Camellia Oil" from Asia, Bien Padre Foods continues to promote healthy eating by producing affordable foods that taste great, and offer health benefits as well.

In 2009, we continue to seek high-quality, healthy, and delicious foods for you. We are the first in the United States to import the green tea oil from Asia. It is derived from seeds of the Camellia sinensis plant. With the many scientifically-proven benefits of green tea, our Oila product (green tea oil) is a more refined and healthier alternative to current cooking oils.
